Mashup Event Details
Register your coed crew(s). Your stroker and steersperson (1M, 1F) will stay with your club’s canoe, and seats 2-5 will be randomized amongst all participating clubs. Paddlers will line up next to canoes and shuffling will happen in an orderly process with instructions from the race director. This mashup crew will complete 3 miles. Due to limited boats, two heats will be run if needed.
Club Entry: Each club registers one canoe and provides six paddlers (3 men and 3 women). Clubs may coordinate with each other in advance to form complete crews. These six paddlers will start by their canoe on the beach.
Line-Up Procedure: Crews will line up on the beach next to their club’s canoe as follows:
1 man and 1 woman stand by seats 1 and 6 (either order). These paddlers will stay with the canoe. At least one of them must be a steersperson.
2 remaining women stand by seats 2 and 3 (to be shuffled).
2 remaining men stand by seats 4 and 5 (to be shuffled).
Shuffling Instructions: On the beach, we will announce how paddlers in seats 2–5 should move. For example:
“Seat 2s, move 2 canoes to your left.”
“Seat 3s, move 1 canoe to your right.”
Paddlers at end canoes will loop around to the opposite end.
Final Crews: After shuffling, each canoe will have a mixed team (3 men, 3 women). Paddlers can rearrange seat assignments within the canoe as they prefer.
Additional Notes:
If a club has more mashup crews than canoes, they may register the same canoe twice, assuming a second heat will be available.
After registration closes on Wednesday, 5/7 at 11:59 PM, race organizers will assign canoes to heats.
If only a few clubs need additional canoes, we’ll do our best to locate substitutes.
Coed Mashup heats will be awarded separately, times will not be combined.

Fees and Registration
All registration and payments must be done on the NCOCA registration site. Registration to open by Thursday, May 1, 2025. Registration closes on Wednesday, May 7, 11:59 PM. No race day registrations.
Each paddler will pay a flat fee ($25) and race as many times as they (or their coach) desire! To cover race fees, we ask that clubs count the number of participating paddlers and provide a check made out to NCOCA the morning of the event, or via PayPal or Zelle (treasurer@ncoca.com) by noon on Friday May 9, 2025. Be honest with your headcount when calculating fees – we can always audit after the event!
Awards
We’re trying to reduce waste! Awards will consist of a photo-op in O Kalani’s yard! Awards budget will be going to the NCOCA Sunshine Fund to support scholarships and young paddlers.
Note: divisions with insufficient entries will be combined with the next-lower age division.
5+ entries: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
3+ entries: 1st, 2nd
<3 entries: category combined with lower age division (if available) OR 1st place only
Coed Mashup heats will be awarded separately, times will not be combined.
Safety
Bring your spray skirts, which may be required depending on conditions. You must have six PFDs and a tow rope in each canoe.
