Join O Kalani

I want to try outrigger paddling

  1. Fill out the NCOCA Smartwaiver. Waivers must be done yearly and apply from February of the current year to the end of January the following year. After you submit the form, check your email and click on the confirmation link to complete the waiver. If you are unsure of your waiver status, please email secretary@okalanioutrigger.org. Please do NOT do the waiver more than once for the current year!
  2. Sundays at 9AM there are open co-ed recreational practices. Give OC paddling a try with a few free sessions. Please fill out our Guest Paddler Sign-up form. We’ll look out for you.
    1. A session runs around 1.5 hours, so make sure you’ve eaten well beforehand.
    2. Wear clothes that are suitable for getting wet. Avoid wearing cotton. For your feet, wear water shoes, flip flops, or go barefoot. Water and sunscreen are a must. Other things you might want are a hat, sunglasses, and an energy bar. After practice, you’ll want a towel and a warm change of clothes.
    3. Swimming ability is encouraged but not required. If you cannot swim or do not feel comfortable in open waters, we will ask you to wear a non-inflatable PFD vest.

How do I become a member?

  2. Complete the O Kalani Membership Form.
  3. Read the NCOCA Code of Ethics (pg. 5-6 of the PDF)
  4. Pay your membership dues and, if applicable, vessel storage fees. We will follow up with a PayPal invoice via email. Fees will be pro-rated toward the end of the middle or end of the racing season (e.g., August 1 and onwards). If you do not pay your invoice within 30 days of its receipt or other arrangement made with and confirmed in writing by the board, it is assumed you are not joining and will be removed from our Teamsnap distribution. Any storage assigned to you or waitlisted for you may be canceled.  We are open to other payment arrangements should this cause financial hardship. Please contact treasurer@okalanioutrigger.org and secretary@okalanioutrigger.org to work something out.

    • $100 for Young Adults (15- to 18-years-old) – All individuals 18 years old and under who want to paddle pay the Junior Membership have the same privileges as the General Membership but receive no voting rights.
    • $125 for EACH vessel storage slot – Fully paid members may store a vessel (OC-1, OC-2, or surf-ski) at O Kalani’s site at the annual rate of $125 per vessel. First-come, first- served basis, space permitting. Complete and submit the Canoe Storage Rental Agreement (in an upcoming section on this form). Storage billed separately from membership dues. Storage is an optional add-on to membership.
  5. If you are interested in racing, see directions below for obtaining your NCOCA ID card.
  6. Attend weekday and weekend practices. Regular practice is encouraged if you will be racing with us. For a list of sprint regattas and long distance races, see the NCOCA events calendar. On Teamsnap, indicate your availability or unavailability for races. (See more info about Teamsnap below.) You should already be a member of our Teamsnap group. If you aren’t, please email secretary@okalanioutrigger.org to be invited. Crews are assembled at coaches’ discretion. Regular training at club practices is encouraged.
Racing: Get your NCOCA ID card

To participate in an NCOCA race (sprint regattas or long distance races), O Kalani must have an NCOCA ID card for you. NCOCA ID cards are obtained and stored by the secretary. An ID card is good for several years and will be provided at no extra charges. If you need an ID card or if you don’t think you have an ID card with O Kalani, please email secretary@okalanioutrigger.org. To obtain an ID card, please email the following.

  1. Headshot photo – Face must face camera fully (no angled shots). Photo must not be blurry and should include shoulders, neck, and full head. No hats or sunglasses. For more information, see these guidelines.
  2. An ID showing your name and date of birth – for example, a passport or a driver’s license
  3. Completed NCOCA waiver for the current season – you should already have done this with your membership application.

O Kalani will request the card from the NCOCA. New cards will usually be available and handed out at the next NCOCA event. O Kalani will pick it up and store it for you.

TeamSnap: Stay updated, sign up for practices and races

O Kalani uses Teamsnap to send email announcements and updates to the team about upcoming events, races, and practices. The service has a website as well as iOS and Android apps. (We recommend getting the app!) To be invited to the O Kalani Teamsnap group, please email secretary@okalanioutrigger.org

Please indicate your intent to attend any racing events or practices early. It helps our coaches see who is coming and plan crews and boats accordingly. See below for quick tutorial.
