New to Paddling?
Before your first time out, please fill out the online waiver and register under club O Kalani. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you are committed to joining. This waiver is for our insurance purposes only and is not for membership. (If you’re looking for the membership form, scroll down.) See our calendar to find out which time would work out best for you. The best day for most first timers is on Sunday mornings at 9am. Morning conditions tend to be milder, calmer, better for beginners. The men’s/women’s practices through the week (Monday through Thursday evenings) are more intense and usually in more challenging conditions, better suited for experienced paddlers and conditioned athletes.
If you have never been on an outrigger canoe before, there are a few things you can do to prepare. Practices generally run between 2 and 3 hours, so make sure your body is ready to be on the move for that long by eating properly and hydrating beforehand. Wear clothes that are suitable for getting wet. Avoid wearing any cotton as it makes the wearer cold when wet. For the feet, wear watershoes, surf booties, flip-flops (slippas), or go barefoot. Wear suncreen, bring a hat, a water bottle… typical outdoor stuff. Do not bring anything with you that you wouldn’t want to lose or get wet (keys, wallet, cell phone) Be sure to bring a warm change of clothes and a towel for afterwards.
